Website launch and upcoming events

Mustapha's blog has just launched. Come here for news about what's going on at the hotel, bar or restaurant, and what's going on in and around Zanzibar.

The big upcoming event right here on the east coast is our Big Reggae Party tomorrow night with tunes from Bwejuu DJ Mzee Kwajiji (translates roughly as "elder of the village"). We are going to have cheap beers - TSH2,000 - and some beautiful cocktails, including the Sugar Daddy, made up with fresh sugar cane juice.

Massage and Healing at Mustapha's

Mustapha's Treetop Spa will be offering professional massage and healing treatments for the months of June, July and August 2010.

How to live with no electricity

Zanzibar has had no power for two months but many people believe the outage will bring only good in the long run

(This article first appeared in Sunday Times Ecosse on 14 February 2010, this is the unedited version.)

Electric dreams

You may have heard. There is no electricity in Zanzibar other than the startling lightning of monsoon season. A fire decimated much of the system that brings us power from the mainland, and spare parts are on order. Talk is of no electricity for a week, two weeks, three weeks. Some even say we might yet rival the six week power cut of 2008.

The top ten rules of successful travel journalism

These for me are the key requisites of producing good travel journalism and succeeding to the best of one’s abilities in a crowded field – I hesitate to even call it a “business” as there are so few people that generate a full-time income from travel writing. It should be a labour of love.

1. Tell a story. Paint a picture.

Game fishing local style

This is a piece that I wrote for the July-August edition of Swahili Coast. It was a rushed, last-minute trip having just got back from the UK, but I really enjoyed it and want to go fishing again!

Zanzibar's newest attraction

This is a piece I wrote for the June/July edition of Swahili Coast on the Kiwengwa-Pongwe Forest Reserve, an exciting new destination for visitors to Zanzibar. Travel agents and tour operators, please send guests there.

Taking the Jambiani cultural tour

This is a piece that I wrote for Karibu magazine about the cultural tour that you can do in the coastal village of Jambiani - would recommend it for all visitors to the East Coast who want to understand a bit about the history, culture, flora and fauna of the area.

Unguja Ukuu - a gem of Zanzibar

This is an article I wrote for the May-June edition of Swahili Coast magazine, which came out earlier this week. It's about the southern Zanzibari village of Unguja Ukuu, a location scarcely visited by tourists but with a rich mythology and stunning islands to the south.

Casuarina spa launch

Mustapha’s Place is launching a new mini-spa offering unique treatments such as exotic Zanzibar spice body scrubs and traditional “bongo” massage.
